A raven perching upon his shoulder glances toward the noose. The platform and railing of the gallows are streaked with bird excrement. Below, a young Roland Deschain stares sorrowfully as he points to the cooked fillet of steak he holds up, apparently for Hax to see. Cuthbert also holds a fillet but looks down and away from the gruesome sight.

Interior illustration for THE DARK TOWER: THE GUNSLINGER. Michael's portrayal of the the young Roland in this scene suggests a young Stephen King. This was somewhat prescient on his part as the character Stephen King appears in the last book and someone else remarks that "he could have been in Roland's family."
