Acrylic on illustration board
THE PLANET SAVERS
From Wonderworks (Donning 1979)
As per the art director's instructions, I finally had the chance to design a cover with space for the type in the middle. I finished it leaving a light area in the center left and delivered it, only to find that the art director had changed his mind and wanted the type on top.
Home again, I added pieces of board to the top and sides, filled in the cracks with modeling paste, and managed to match the paint and enlarge it so that there was plenty of room for the type on top. It was a struggle, but when I left my studio to go have lunch, I was pleased with how the painting had turned out.
But when I returned, my studio was in a shambles. While I was gone my cat had tried to climb up my drawing board. She must have slipped on the smooth surface of the painting and tried to grasp it with her claws, because there were scratch marks all down the front.
I was able to fix it and the painting still hangs in my living room as a testimonial to my patience...well, stubbornness, at least!
