THE WARLORD OF MARS
Since Barsoom is a desert planet, it seemed likely that most of my cover art would feature scenes in arid locales. To avoid overuse of backgrounds of that nature I seized the opportunity to depict a scene with John Carter in a forest. Here he is accompanied by Woola the calot, a Barsoomian "watchdog" of great loyalty and legendary ferocity.
The Warlord of Mars
E.R. Burroughs (Del Rey)
The Gods of Mars ended on a cliffhanger -- John Carter's beloved wife Dejah Thoris and former slave Thuvia are trapped with vindictive Phaidor by the evil queen Issus in an impenetrable prison cell only accessible once every Martian year. To free them, Carter journeys to the frozen wastelands of northern Mars, full of danger and horrifying creatures.
