Based on an experience I had while hiking in a local park on a very foggy day. There was a path that runs through an overhanging mass of vines and other foliage near a lake, and I was the only person in the place, except for my infant son, who was napping in the... One of my favorite personal works, this one has hung in my studio from the time I painted it-a window into a place of refuge. It was originally considered to be a sketch for a larger piece, but I decided it works well enough for me the size that it is. The Sanctuary series is related to the Passage paintings. It suggests a tangent point where conceptual spheres meet. I did “Open” and “Wide” for my book THE ART OF MICHAEL WHELAN, in which I established the connecting points, but I have not... As with OPEN, I was working to establish the connecting points between my Passage paintings and this new series, before I went on to define the new themes in their entirety. I hope to get back to this world soon.
