SF HALL OF FAME INDUCTION SPEECH

SF HALL OF FAME INDUCTION SPEECH

Michael Whelan had rocketships flying over his house when he was a toddler.

His father worked for the aerospace industry, so he always lived near airbases and got to see things—like rocket launches—that most of us only saw in grainy black and white.

If rockets weren’t flying directly over his house, they should have been.

Michael excelled from the beginning. He sold every piece of art he took to his first World Con. He’ll tell you that that’s because they were all priced under $20, but you know that they were probably also beautiful, thoughtful pieces.

ART FROM JORDANCON

ART FROM JORDANCON

When visiting the Glass Onion Graphics booth at SFF conventions, a highlight is the opportunity to see Michael Whelan’s paintings in person.

Of course his art looks fantastic on dust jackets in the bookstore—and even reproduced on our website—but there is no substituting the wow factor of staring at his original paintings up close.

And then there’s the opportunity to speak with the artist himself. When Michael isn’t busy participating in panel discussions, he can usually be found at our booth.

JORDANCON Q AND A

JORDANCON Q AND A

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following are answers to questions posed to Michael Whelan for the JordanCon bulletin. JordanCon V is taking place this weekend, April 19-21 in Roswell Georgia. Michael Whelan is the Artist Guest of Honor. Also appearing are Brandon Sanderson, author of A Memory of Light and The Way of Kings, and Harriet McDougal, editor of The Wheel of Time.
You have been recognized at some of the largest popular culture conventions in the country. What are your expectations of a smaller convention like JordanCon?
I’ve been going to conventions of all sizes for many years now, though I usually only make it to one or two a year. At smaller ones I generally expect to meet interesting people, have some enlightening and informative discussions, make new friends, sell some artwork, and see a place I haven’t been to before. Whether large or small, I usually come home a little hoarse and needing to catch up on some sleep!

STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE NEWS

STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE NEWS

Fresh off completing the last three books of The Wheel of Time series, Brandon Sanderson is set to return to his own epic The Stormlight Archive this fall. The sequel to The Way of Kings (Stormlight Book 2) will be titled Words of Radiance and is scheduled for release on November 12, 2013.

Michael Whelan will also be returning to the series. Clearly, this is a special author / artist pairing. Whelan won the Chesley Award for Best Cover Illustration (Hardcover) for The Way of Kings in 2010. His brilliant vision of Rand al’Thor adorned the cover of A Memory of Light, the last book of The Wheel of Time, earlier this year.
