Started as an exercise in my Leftover & Palette Gremlins project, I intended to leave this piece rough and move on to something else.

But what began with my obsession over a scrap of canvas on my studio floor became a small LUMEN painting.

As with all of the works in my LUMEN series, this plays with the multiple meanings derived from the word “lumen” (light, cavity, window). It also features a figure attempting to reach light in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Somehow despite the daily news being a relentless stream of misery, I felt hopeful in my own world. That optimism comes across in this figure’s joyful leap.
